US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell had a meeting on Friday morning with the UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, who updated and briefed the US official on the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), UN spokesperson in Cyprus, Aleem Siddique, has told CNA.
Siddique also said that Spehar will accompany Michell, this afternoon, with the UNFICYP Force Commander, Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir, and the US Ambassador in Nicosia, Kathleen Doherty, “on a military escort of the Green Line in the buffer zone.”
Mitchell is currently visiting Cyprus, as part of a tour that includes Pristina, Skopje, Belgrade and Athens.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Numerous UN-backed negotiations, aiming at reuniting the island under a federal roof, have failed to yield results.
