Winter blues

It is most definitely the end of the summer, and even though we have seen unusual weather all over the world this year, for some of us, especially in the UK where the hot summer sun is usually limited and the cold, wet weather is the norm, it is easy to get the winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as SAD, which affects mood changes during the winter when there is less light. Some believe that it should be treated like that of other types of depression, so like the other forms, it is always suggested to talk about things, to make sure one gets regular exercise, eat well with food that is good for the brain. It is suggested to get as much natural sunlight as possible, even a brief walk will help. Sitting near windows when indoors and purchasing a light box that is especially for this can help considerably. It is a special lamp that is used in the morning for a short period of time, producing a bright higher lux light. The light simulates the sunlight that is limited during the winter months. It is thought to work on the principle that the light works by encouraging the brain to reduce the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy, and help increase the production of serotonin, the hormone which affects your mood.

For many who just don’t like the long winter months, whether it is the cold or dark nights, it is a good idea to prepare yourself for it. It is easy to sit snug by the fire, get lazy and not want to go out at all every evening, so get ready and do other things to improve the mood.

I have my summer activities and my winter activities to keep me busy and happy. In the summer, I will be out in the fresh air dancing and enjoying festivals, enjoying the outside as much as possible, walking or working. In the winter, I am indoors but still like to keep active, so the decorating gets done to some lively music so I can sing and dance along the way.

There is always batch baking that can be done and some put in the freezer so you don’t have to do it in the spring when you want to be out again. So no excuses for unhealthy eating!

Art and craft projects are great for winter with the TV or radio in the background – this can be great company and helps the time pass beautifully.

Exercise! Yes, in the cold, it is more difficult to drag yourself out to the gym, or any other outdoor activity for that matter, so if you are one of those, then find yourself an active course of learning that you have been wanting to go on but never got round to it. There are so many things to do from Martial Arts to dance. There are many different classes to choose from where you’ll learn something new. Look online and see what takes your fancy.

Even socialising can be difficult in the winter when you don’t really want to venture out in the cold. So make an effort, even if not as often as normal, to get out to events you enjoy or be with people that you enjoy being around, to have love and laughter with people that are good for you to be with and help bring out the best in you.

Eat well and don’t be tempted to eat all the stodgy food. It may be cold at times for salads and fresh fruit that you would have loved in the summer, but you can enjoy lots of hot tasty vegetables instead. Have fruit compote and healthy fruit crumbles homemade with wholesome flour and oats, without added sugars. That way you will get the same nutrients.

Exercise as much as you can, and if you really don’t want to go out on some days, work out at home with some simple home equipment, motivational music, DVD or app. In a world of technology now, life is too easy!

So prepare yourself, get physical, eat well and beat the winter blues!
