Women held captive and raped in Nicosia flat

Police have arrested three men on suspicion of locking up two women in a Nicosia apartment and repeatedly raping and beating them for days.

The Bulgarian women’s ordeal finally ended on Wednesday when one of the women managed to escape and was discovered in a disorientated state by a police patrol car. Officers then stormed the apartment in Nicosia during which they discovered the other woman.

Three out of the four men in the apartment – all said to be from Bangladesh – have been taken into custody.

One of the victims told investigators that she was forced into marry one of the men but was immediately locked in an apartment room upon her arrival in Cyprus. They were then held against their will, beaten and repeatedly raped by the three men.

Both women have since been placed in the care of the Domestic Violence and Minor Abuse against Women shelter.

The women had arrived in Cyprus on February 10 while one of them managed to escape when one of their alleged captors accidentally left the door unlocked.

The three suspects are set to be taken before a Nicosia magistrate on Thursday where investigators will request to keep them on remand. Police also discovered pills inside the apartment that are currently being examined by forensics
