Award-winning Canadian Cypriot author, Irene (Ειρήνη) Matys is bringing her celebrated cookbook, My Cypriot Table, to the United Kingdom this October, for a heartfelt celebration of Cypriot cuisine, culture, and storytelling.
Born in Famagusta, Cyprus, as refugees, Irene and her family found a new beginning in Canada, a country that welcomed them with hope, opportunity, and the chance to build a new life while honouring the traditions they carried with them.
Those experiences became the inspiration behind My Cypriot Table. More than a cookbook, it is a deeply personal memoir told through food, a love letter to the island of Cyprus that shaped Irene’s roots and to Canada, the country that gave her family a home. Through cherished family recipes, personal stories, and beautiful photography, the book celebrates resilience, identity, and the enduring power of food to preserve culture, connect generations, and create a sense of belonging.
My Cypriot Table has touched readers around the world by sharing not only the vibrant flavours of Cyprus but also the universal stories of family, migration and home. It is a celebration of two countries forever intertwined in Irene’s heart – Cyprus, where her story began, and Canada, where it continues to flourish.
On Wednesday 14 October, Irene will be at the Cypriot Community Centre in Wood Green, London, at 7pm, sharing the stories behind her cookbook and celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Cyprus.
Entrance is free with plenty of food and refreshments being served complimentary.
The event is being supported by the Cypriot Community Centre, CWF Events, Cypriots Worldwide and Komi Kebir Association.
