London Sport appoints UK Cypriot to its Board

The main sporting organisation for Londoners has recently confirmed the appointment of UK Cypriot Stephen Alambritis to its Board.

London Sport exists to make London the most physically active city in the world. They are supported by Sport England and the Mayor of London, and work in partnership with London’s Local Authorities and a host of agencies to support less active Londoners to build physical activity habits that support their health, wellbeing and prosperity

London Sport is their ambition to make London the most active city in the world is bold and brave because they believe in London and its people.

It is not about physical activity for physical activity’s sake – it is about London continuing to grow and prosper, through the health of its people. They aim to achieve this by:

1. Getting less active adults active

2. Giving young people a physical activity habit. For life

London Sport believes the appointment of Larnaca born Alambritis will boost the organisations vision of making London the most physically active city in the world. Existing Trustees already bring a wide range of experience and specialisms. It is thought that Councillor Alambritis who has been a hugely successful and popular leader at Merton Council, will complement the current Board’s areas of expertise and will help to enhance London Sport’s connections with a range of industry stakeholders operating across the capital. The appointment also reflect London Sport’s focus on increasing the diversity of the organisation’s workforce, making it more representative of the communities it serves. Alambritis will take up his positions with immediate effect and for an initial term of three years.

Commenting on the appointment of Alambritis, Jillian Moore, Chair of London Sport said “I am delighted to welcome Stephen to our Board. He brings formidable expertise and a vast network of connections, all of which will be of enormous value to our work. In light of the current situation, it is more important than ever that we are not spectators and we continue to make the case for the value of physical activity and sport in London. I am confident that our new Trustees including Stephen, will, alongside our existing Board and the whole team at London Sport, play an important role in supporting these efforts, and helping achieve our vision of making London the most physically active city in the world.”

Councillor Stephen Alambritis is the council leader at the London Borough of Merton. He is also Chair of the South London Partnership (SLP), the sub-regional grouping of neighbouring boroughs including Croydon, Kingston, Richmond and Sutton. Stephen is a former Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (FCIPR) and was a Class I Football Association Referee.

Commenting on his appointment Alambritis, a former Class I Football Association Referee who officiated on KOPA in the 1990’s said: “My appointment comes at a crucial time for London Sport and I look forward to working closely with all the Trustees on the Board of London Sport in the coming months. I am delighted to be joining an organisation that is supported by Sport England and the Mayor of London, and works in partnership with London’s Local Authorities including mine in Merton, to support less active Londoners to build physical activity habits that support their health, wellbeing and prosperity. This is now so important given the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to stay fit and to be physically active”
