Cyprus ambassador thanks Cambodia for support on Cyprus settlement

Cyprus’ new ambassador to Cambodia, Koula Sofianou, has thanked the country for its long-standing support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and reaffirmed Nicosia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

Sofianou presented her credentials on 17 September to Cambodia’s acting head of state and Senate president, Hun Sen, according to an official announcement.

She conveyed greetings from President Nikos Christodoulides and expressed Cyprus’ commitment to closer cooperation based on the United Nations Charter and international law.

She also highlighted the importance of relations within the frameworks of EU-Cambodia cooperation and the EU’s engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Their discussions covered potential cooperation in investment, climate change, innovation, education, sustainable tourism and cultural heritage protection, alongside stronger ties between the peoples of the two countries.

Sofianou also wished Cambodia success in organising the Francophonie Summit, which will be held in Asia for the second time.

Cyprus and Cambodia established diplomatic relations in 2000.
