Survivor’s courage helps secure further prison sentence for child rapist

A survivor of childhood sexual abuse has spoken about the relief of securing justice after supporting a police investigation into her rape in Letchworth Garden City.

Edward Stimson, now 22, received an additional two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for two counts of rape. The sentence will run consecutively to the 15-year term he was already serving for four counts of rape.

The court heard that the survivor was 13 when the abuse happened. Originally from Hertfordshire, she came forward four years later and supported the investigation through to a verdict.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “When the verdict came in it felt like a weight has been lifted off my chest and I can finally move on with my life.”

Investigator Alison Coutts, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team, praised her resilience in confronting painful memories and giving evidence in court.

She said speaking about abuse can be extremely difficult and expressed hope that the survivor’s experience would reassure others that support is available whenever they feel ready, even if the abuse happened many years ago.
